Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A nitro compound I (R1 and R2 are H, halogen, lower alkoxy, lower alkyl or lower alkenyl; X is -CH=CH- or -CH2-CH2-; when X is -CH=CH-, R1 is not H and R2 is not H nor 3-methoxy).
EXAMPLE: 2-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)nitroethane.
USE: A precursor for productiin of 4-hydrixyphenylacetic acid, which is a phenylacetic acid-type antiphlogistic and analgesic agent.
PROCESS: 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde II is reacted with nitromethane by heating in the presence of an organic acid, e.g. acetic acid, etc., and a weak base, e.g. ammonium acetate, etc., to give the compound I (X is -CH=CH-) in high yield. The product is further reduced to give the compound I (X is -CH2-CH2-).
