Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of pesticides, medicines, perfumery, etc. in high yield, by reacting a benzyl alcohol derivative with CO in the presence of a Rh compound and an I compound under properly selected conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A phenylacetic acid derivative of formula II, e.g. phenylacetic acid, is prepared by reacting a benzyl alcohol derivative of formula I (Y is H, alkyl, phenylalkyl, alkylcarbonyl or phenylalkylcarbonyl), e.g. benzyl alcohol with CO, in the presence of a catalyst comprising a Rh compound (pref. chloride, nitrate, etc. of Rh; 0.1W1mol% based on the benzyl alcohol derivative) and an I compound (HI, methyl iodide, etc.; 5W60mol%) at 50W150°C, pref. 100W150°C, if necessary, in the presence of water or an alcohol.
