Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:A xanthine derivative of formula I (R is lower alkyl group; n is an integer 2-4). EXAMPLE:4,4-Diacetyl-1,7-ditheobrominylheptane. USE:A medicine having an inhibitory activity against cyclic 3',5'-adenosine monophosphate phosphodiesterase. PROCESS:A 1-(omega-halogenoalkyl)-3,7-dimethylxanthine (H) of formula II (X is halogen) is reacted with an alpha,gamma-diketone derivative (D) of formula III in a suitable solvent, e.g. acetone or methyl ethyl ketone, in the presence of a base, e.g. sodium or potassium carbonate, to give the xanthine derivative of formula I. The molar amount of H is preferably 2.1-3 times that of D.
