Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent grains from deteriorating by oxidation during a long-term preservation by vacuum-packing grains and oxygen absorbents in a bag made of soft packing materials which are treated by vacuum deposition of a metal, metal oxide or silicon dioxide.
CONSTITUTION: Grains are vacuum-packed in a bag made of soft packing materials which are treated by vacuum deposition of a metal, metal oxide or silicon dioxide together with an oxygen absorbent. A general method of packing is as follows; the grains and absorbent are placed in the bag which is made of films treated by a vacuum deposition of metal and whose three edges are heatsealed. After the air is drained from the bag, the opening part of the bag is heat-sealed. Examples of the soft packing materials are films of thermoplastic resin, such as polyolefin, nylon, or polyester, which are treated by vacuum deposition of a metal or metal oxide. It is useful to use desiccants together with the oxygen absorbent for elongating a preservation time.
