Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title resin having improved transparency, set-through, weatherability, the refractive index equal to that of alkali-containing glass fibers, by polymerizing methyl methacrylate, a chalogenatec, vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon, an unsaturated polyester, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A) 65W75 wt.% of methyl methacrylate is preliminarily polymerized with B) 18W26 wt.% of a (halogenated) vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g., styrene, C) 3W10 wt.% of an unsaturated polyester, a glycidyl ether-type epoxy resin, or a vinyl ester obtained by reacting the epoxy resin with an unsaturated monobasic acid, e.g., acrylic acid, etc., and, if necessary, D) a compound having two or more ethylenic unsaturated groups, e.g., divinylbenzere to give a syrupy precondensate, which is impregnated into glass fibers and polymerized to form the desired reinforced resin.
USE: A syrupy precondensate impregnated into a roving, a mat, etc. made of C-glass fibers is polymerized to be set.
