Abstract

PURPOSE:To ensure reapplication of toners, without lowering the function of a cleaning unit, by running a cleaning member in the opposite direction to the cleaning operation during the reapplication. CONSTITUTION:A cleaning roller 10 mounted in a cleaning unit 9 is made of sponge, rubber or brush and is driven to rotate in contact with the circumference of a photosensitive drum 1. Those rotations are carried out at a low speed in the opposite direction to the rotations of the drum 1, as shown in arrow B, when the cleaning unit 9 is changed to a cleaning mode. When this unit 9 is changed to a reapplication mode, the rotations are carried out at a low speed in the opposite direction to that shown in the arrow B. Thus, the movement of the photosensitive member is used to ensure the cleaning operation and the reapplication, while accomplishing the recovery of the toners, without any reduction in the cleaning effects.
