Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent an Na component from gathering on the surface so that the directivity of liquid crystal molecules may be maintained for a long time and that the operating voltage as a display device may not be high by specifying the thickness of a ransparent insulating film after rubbing.
CONSTITUTION: Upper and lower glasses 2 and 3, which are made of soda glass substrate, are equipped with a displaying transparent electrode 4, an opposite electrode leading electrode 5 and an opposite electrode 6 and are formed further with a transparent insulating film 7 of SiO2 by the CVD method or the like while excepting the outer terminal portion 8 of the electrode 4, the electrode 5 and its opposite portion. Then, the film 7 has its surface rubbed with an inorganic polishing agent such as diamond paste unitl its thickness ranges from 0.05 to 0.5 microns. The glasses 2 and 3 are sealed by the spacer layer 10 to have a spacing of about 5 to 10 microns. Thus, it is possible to improve the yield of the hermetical sealing and the yield of production relating the breakage of the electrode 4.
