Abstract

PURPOSE: To make the thickness of a liquid crystal layer uniform, and provide a device which is good in response speed and display quality suited for displaying picture elements of electric calculators, liquid crystal televisions, etc. by forming bumps for bonding and spacers of liquid crystal cells on a semiconductor substrate.
CONSTITUTION: Bumps 14 defining the thickness of a liquid crystal layer 16 and bumps 15 for connecting external terminals are respectively provided between a semiconductor substrate 11 including circuits for selecting and driving liquid crystal driving electrodes and an upper glass substrate 12. The height of the bumps is set at 3W20μ, and the length of one side at ≤200μ. In this way, the substrates are sealed by means of a sealing agent 13. Further, bumps 17 are provided at an equal interval within a liquid crystal display region 16, and are used as spacers, whereby the uniformity of the thickness of the liquid crystal layer 16 is well maintained.
