Description
θ5及びθ6は、製造誤差によってバラツキを有するが、0°〜5°の範囲で製造誤差を許容することによって、高い歩留まりを実現することができる。θ1、θ2、θ3、及びθ4は、大きすぎるとコントラストを低下させる原因となるが、小さすぎるとラビングのアライメント精度等を高めなければならなくなり、歩留まりが低下する。したがって、θ1、θ2、θ3、θ4、θ5、及びθ6を上記範囲に設定することで、高い歩留まりと高いコントラストの双方を実現することができる。
この構成によれば、第1軸と直交する平面内、或いは第2軸と直交する平面内において対称な視野角特性が得られる。
この構成によれば、偏光板の光軸と配向膜の配向規制方向とのずれに起因する表示不良が防止され、高品質な画像表示が可能な電子機器を提供することができる。
図7は、画素電極9の変形例を示す平面図である。図7において図2と共通の構成要素については、同じ符号を付し、詳細な説明は省略する。図7では、図面を簡略化するために、帯状電極の数は図2と異ならせている。
図8は、本発明の電子機器の一例である携帯電話1300の斜視図である。携帯電話1300は、本発明の液晶表示装置を小サイズの表示部1301として備え、複数の操作ボタン1302、受話口1303、及び送話口1304を備えて構成されている。携帯電話1300は、前述した実施形態の液晶表示装置を備えているので、偏光板の光軸と配向膜の配向規制方向とのずれに起因する表示不良を防止した高品質な表示が可能である。
Claims (5)
- 対向する一対の基板と、前記一対の基板間に挟持された液晶層と、前記一対の基板のうちの一方の基板の前記液晶層側に設けられた第1電極と、前記一方の基板の前記液晶層側において前記第1電極上に絶縁膜を介して対向配置された第2電極と、前記一対の基板のうちの他方の基板の前記液晶層とは反対側に設けられた偏光板と、前記一方の基板の前記液晶層と接する面に設けられた第1配向膜と、前記他方の基板の前記液晶層と接する面に設けられた第2配向膜と、を備えた液晶表示装置であって、
前記第2電極には、前記偏光板の光軸と直交する第1軸に沿って配列された複数の帯状電極が設けられ、
前記第1電極と前記第2電極とが対向する領域を、前記第1軸と、前記第1軸と直交する第2軸とによって区画される4つの表示領域に分割した場合に、前記4つの表示領域のうちの第1表示領域には、前記第2軸に対して時計回りの方向に鋭角に交差する複数の第1帯状電極が設けられ、前記第1表示領域と前記第1軸を挟んで隣接する第2表示領域には、前記第2軸に対して反時計回りの方向に鋭角に交差する複数の第2帯状電極が設けられ、前記第2表示領域と前記第2軸を挟んで隣接する第3表示領域には、前記第2軸に対して時計回りの方向に鋭角に交差する複数の第3帯状電極が設けられ、前記第3表示領域と前記第1軸を挟んで隣接する第4表示領域には、前記第2軸に対して反時計回りの方向に鋭角に交差する複数の第4帯状電極が設けられており、
前記第2軸と前記第1帯状電極とが鋭角に交差する角度をθ1、前記第2軸と前記第2帯状電極とが鋭角に交差する角度をθ2、前記第2軸と前記第3帯状電極とが鋭角に交差する角度をθ3、前記第2軸と前記第4帯状電極とが鋭角に交差する角度をθ4、前記第2軸と前記第1配向膜の配向規制方向とが鋭角に交差する角度をθ5、前記第2軸と前記第2配向膜の配向規制方向とが鋭角に交差する角度をθ6とした場合に、前記θ5及びθ6は、いずれも前記θ1、θ2、θ3、及びθ4のうちの最も小さい角度よりも小さいことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記θ1、θ2、θ3、及びθ4は、いずれも10°〜15°であり、前記θ5及びθ6は、いずれも0°〜5°であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1帯状電極と前記第2帯状電極とは、前記第1軸を対称軸として線対称に配置され、前記第3帯状電極と前記第4帯状電極とは、前記第1軸を対称軸として線対称に配置されていることを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1帯状電極と前記第4帯状電極とは前記第2軸を対称軸として線対称に配置され、前記第2帯状電極と前記第3帯状電極とは前記第2軸を対称軸として線対称に配置されていることを特徴とする請求項3に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 請求項1〜4のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示装置を備えていることを特徴とする電子機器。
