Description
本願は、「Prosthetic Disc for Intervertebral
Insertion」と題された米国仮特許出願第60/473,802号および「Intervertebral Prosthetic Disc」と題された同第60/473,803号(共に2003年5月27日に出願)の優先権を主張し、これらの完全な開示は、本明細書中に参考として援用される。
(1.発明の分野)

(発明の簡単な要旨)
本発明の1つの局面において、隣接した椎骨間に挿入するための人工椎間板は、それぞれの椎骨に係合し、かつそれぞれの椎骨に接して設置可能な外側表面、ならびに内側曲面を有する、上部プレートおよび下部プレートを備える。これらの曲面の間にコアが配置されることにより、プレートがコアの上をスライド可能になる。好ましくは、これらのプレートは、先行技術のように単一方向の移動に限定されることなく、あらゆる方向に自由にスライド可能である。本発明は、これらのプレートまたはコアの一方または両方の上に、周縁制限構造をさらに提供して、コア上でのプレートのスライド移動の間、少なくとも1つのプレートの曲面に対してコアを保持する。この周縁制限構造は、上部プレートおよび下部プレートのうちの少なくとも1つに対して、コアの移動の限界または境界を規定する。しかしながら、このような周縁境界内で、プレートに対するコアの移動は、好ましくは拘束を受けない。すなわち、プレートに対するコアの移動は、顕著な阻害または摩擦なしに、任意の方向に起こり得る。このコアは、好ましくは上部または下部プレートのいずれにも取り付けられず、従ってこれらのプレートはコアの上に互いに自由に関節でつながり得、低摩擦を生じる表面を提供する。
