Abstract
Description
カーボンナノチューブは、閉じた同心の多層シェルまたは多層ナノチューブ(MWNTs)として或いは単層ナノチューブ(SWNTs)として存在することが可能である。しかしながら、工業用途に好ましいカーボンナノチューブは単層カーボンナノチューブである。
1991年の発見から、カーボンの単層ナノチューブは広範囲に研究されてきた。非特許文献3を参照。走査型トンネル顕微鏡(STM)画像および電子回折の研究をベースとして、単層ナノチューブ(SWNTs)は、五角形および六角形から成る半球状末端によってキャップされたグラファイトシートのシームレスシリンダーから構成されることが示された。非特許文献4および5を参照。SWNTsの高解像透過型電子顕微鏡(HRTEM)画像に観察される曲線は、上記単層ナノチューブがその多層対照物より曲げ易いものであることを示している。

他に表示しない限り本明細書中で用いられる語「流体(liquid)」は、固体または結晶性物質と気体との中間の物質の状態であって、物質が非常に小さな剪断応力下で流動する能力を有するが、比較的非圧縮性を有し、制限なしに広がる能力に乏しく、自由表面を有することができる状態を表す。本明細書中で用いられる語「流体(liquid)」は、室温での液体に限定されないだけでなく、液体(例えば、液体He、CO2等)に凝縮された気体またはそれらの液体状態に暖められた固体(例えば、フェノール)も含む。

の化合物を表す。好ましいアルキルアンモニウム界面活性剤の例には、それらに限定されないが、トリメチルアンモニウム界面活性剤、例えばセチルトリメチルアンモニウムフルオライド、セチルトリメチルアンモニウムクロライド、セチルトリメチルアンモニウムブロマイドおよびセチルトリメチルアンモニウムヨーダイドが挙げられる。
本発明により、安定性、非凝集カーボンナノチューブである浮遊カーボンナノチューブの組成物を提供する。浮遊カーボンナノチューブの形成において、ナノチューブバンドル、ロープまたは凝集体を個々のナノチューブまたは小さいナノチューブバンドル(例えば、約5ナノチューブ以下を含有するバンドル)中へ分散する。特定の態様では、浮遊カーボンナノチューブは高度に分散され、少量の小さいナノチューブバンドルのみを含有する。上記組成物は、上記ナノチューブロープ、より大きいナノチューブバンドルまたはナノチューブ凝集体の再形成に対して安定である。上記浮遊カーボンナノチューブ組成物は、流体、界面活性剤および特に単分散カーボンナノチューブを含有する。上記組成物は、ある一定量の分散した小さいナノチューブバンドル(即ち、2〜4ナノチューブを含有するバンドル)を含有してもよい。理論によって制限されるものではないが、上記流体および界面活性剤の存在によって、上記ナノチューブバンドル、ロープまた凝集体を含有するカーボンナノチューブ間の相互作用がかなり低下し、本発明の安定性、非凝集浮遊カーボンナノチューブが得られるものと考えられる。上記組成物は、カーボンナノチューブを浮遊させることが可能な界面活性剤、および流体を、浮遊カーボンナノチューブの形成に好適な比率で含有する。
浮遊カーボンナノチューブの組成物の配合に対して、流体および界面活性剤の組成に関して多くのバリエーションがある。各組成物において、上記流体および界面活性剤は、上記カーボンナノチューブを浮遊するのに好適な比で含まれる。
本発明はまた、浮遊カーボンナノチューブを製造する方法を提供する。上記方法は、カーボンナノチューブを浮遊させることが可能な界面活性剤を、流体および上記カーボンナノチューブバンドル、ロープまたは凝集体と、上記カーボンナノチューブの非凝集、安定性浮遊物を形成するのに好適な条件下(例えば、変化する温度で)および比で組み合わせる工程を含む。
本発明の高分散、非凝集、高濃度、浮遊した形のカーボンナノチューブには、現在のテクノロジーにおいて多くの用途が見出されている。上記浮遊カーボンナノチューブは、異なるホストシステムまたは適用品の加工または形成におけるどの段階で導入または添加してもよい。上記浮遊カーボンナノチューブは、出発材料と共に導入しても、または適用品の形成におけるどの段階で添加してもよい。上記浮遊カーボンナノチューブは、バルク材料中に導入しても、または上記材料の表面上に残存させてもよい。上記組成物の上記カーボンナノチューブは、それらを流体、例えば水の中に分散することができる界面活性剤分子で被覆される一方、上記界面活性剤分子は必要であれば、上記浮遊ナノチューブを異なるホストシステムに加工した後、除去してもよい。例えば、上記カーボンナノチューブ浮遊物を、例えば分子回路用基板上に自己集合するのに用いる場合、有機部分の存在が大きな障害となる。従って、上記浮遊カーボンナノチューブを使用するのに、界面活性剤分子で基板上を覆う流動工程時、または上記ナノチューブが表面上に存在してから、上記界面活性剤分子を除去する更なる工程を行ってもよい。自動車工業に関するプラスチックにおける用途に対して、塗料を保持するように静電荷を付与するために、ナノチューブを複合材料中に分散してもよい。良好に分散したナノチューブ/複合材料によって、より少ない材料を用いてより多い単位面積当たりの電荷が得られ、近々、上記材料の高いコストを軽減するのに役立つことが可能となる。更に、単層カーボンナノチューブにより、耐腐食性および腐食に対する保護用のコーティングを強化することも可能となる。浮遊カーボンナノチューブのいくつかの異なる本発明の用途がある。
黒色凝集塊のように見える蒸留水中の所定量の精製カーボンナノチューブを、減圧乾燥機中で乾燥した。用いた界面活性剤はセチルトリメチルアンモニウムブロマイド(CTAB)であった。水溶液中でのCTABに対する臨界ミセル濃度(CMC)は0.9mMであった。クラフト(Krafft)点より高い温度および上記CMCより低い濃度に対して、上記界面活性剤は概して上記溶液中で非結合分子として存在する(J.L.モイリエット(Moilliet)およびB.コリー(Collie)のサーフェス・アクティビティ(Surface Activity)(D.ヴァン・ノストランド社(Van Nostrand Co.)、NY 1951年);およびG.J.T.テディ(Tiddy)のフィジックス・レポーツ(Physics Reports)第57巻第2号)。クラフト点より低い温度(CTABに対して約22℃)では、上記界面活性剤のほとんどが上記浮遊物外で結晶化し、容器の底に沈殿した。上記クラフト点より高い温度および上記CMCより低い濃度では、上記CTABがまず球状ミセルを形成し、CTAB濃度の増加に伴って徐々に棒状ミセルに変化した。
実施例5.1の浮遊カーボンナノチューブの数週間の長期貯蔵下では、上記浮遊カーボンナノチューブのいくらかは沈殿した。これはたぶん、上記試料が、CTABのクラフト点より僅かに低い温度で貯蔵されたことによるものと考えられる(実験室の平均温度は19〜22℃であった)。沈殿した材料は、スポンジ状の軟度を有する黒色凝集塊の外観を有した。他の可能な凝集の機構は水分減少凝集(depletion flocculation)である(例えば、A.G.ヨッド(Yodh)等のPhil.Trans.R.Soc.Lond.A314、第921〜937頁(2001年)参照)。残りの溶液は不透明のままであった。実施例5.1で引用した値(5〜6g/リットル)は、これらの老化後試料に対して適する。
標準的方法で精製された単層カーボンナノチューブを0.1453g秤量した。10.005g秤量した沸騰脱イオン水(DI水)を上記SWNTSと混合した。0.1994gのCTABをこの混合物に加えた。この混合物を、超音波処理浴中で2分間超音波処理し、次いで25℃で一晩静置した。上記混合物を1時間超音波処理した。上記濃度を上記浮遊物の既知の標準試料を用いることによって測定し、予め秤量したペトリ皿に載せて減圧乾燥機中で乾燥した。乾燥が完結した後、上記ペトリ皿と上記浮遊物の標準試料の質量を測定した。CTABの濃度およびペトリ皿の質量は既知であるので、これから乾燥後に残ったSWNTsの質量を計算してもよい。前述の実験に対して、界面活性剤を用いた水中のSWNTsの濃度は12g/リットルと測定された。
1つの実施例では、0.1975gのCTAB、10.086gの沸騰脱イオン水および0.0378gの精製されたSWNT(ヒップコ(HiPco)法による;単層カーボンナノチューブの大量生産用の気相法)を用いて浮遊物を作製して、CTABを用いた水中のSWNTsの濃度3.8g/リットルを有する浮遊物を得た。

Claims (29)
- 流体;
カーボンナノチューブを浮遊させることが可能な界面活性剤;および
カーボンナノチューブ
を含み、
該流体、界面活性剤およびカーボンナノチューブが、該カーボンナノチューブを浮遊させるのに好適な比で含まれることを特徴とする組成物。 - 前記カーボンナノチューブが単層または多層カーボンナノチューブである請求項1記載の組成物。
- 前記カーボンナノチューブが単層カーボンナノチューブである請求項2記載の組成物。
- 前記流体が、水性流体、アルコール、有機流体、無機流体またはそれらの混合物である請求項1記載の組成物。
- 前記流体が濃縮ガスである請求項4記載の組成物。
- 前記水性流体が、水性フッ化ナトリウム、水性塩化ナトリウム、水性臭化ナトリウム、水性ヨウ化ナトリウム、水性フッ化カルシウム、水性塩化カルシウム、水性ヨウ化カルシウム、水性臭化カルシウム、水性硫酸ナトリウム、水性亜硫酸ナトリウム、水性フッ化マグネシウム、水性塩化マグネシウム、水性臭化マグネシウム、水性ヨウ化マグネシウム、水性フッ化アンモニウム、水性臭化アンモニウム、水性塩化アンモニウムまたは水性ヨウ化アンモニウムである請求項4記載の組成物。
- 前記有機流体が、アルコール、エーテル、炭化水素、環状炭化水素または環状芳香族化合物である請求項4記載の組成物。
- 前記アルコールが、飽和1価直鎖状、分岐状、または環状ヒドロキシル化炭化水素である請求項7記載の組成物。
- 前記アルコールが、メタノール、エタノール、プロパノール、イソプロパノール、ブタノール、s−ブタノール、t−ブタノール、ペンタノールまたはヘキサノールである請求項8記載の組成物。
- 前記無機流体が、酸または塩基である請求項4記載の組成物。
- 前記界面活性剤が、アルキルアンモニウム界面活性剤である請求項1記載の組成物。
- 前記アンモニウム界面活性剤が、トリメチルアンモニウム界面活性剤である請求項12記載の組成物。
- 前記トリメチルアンモニウム界面活性剤が、セチルトリメチルアンモニウムフルオライド、セチルトリメチルアンモニウムクロライド、セチルトリメチルアンモニウムブロマイドまたはセチルトリメチルアンモニウムヨーダイドである請求項13記載の組成物。
- 前記界面活性剤が、カチオン性界面活性剤またはアニオン性界面活性剤である請求項1記載の組成物。
- 前記アニオン性界面活性剤が、
以下の式:
のスルホスクシネートジエステル;
以下の式:
のスルホスクシネートモノエステル;
以下の式:
のナフタレンスルホネートホルムアルデヒド縮合物;および
以下の式:
のベンゼンスルホネート;
である請求項15記載の組成物。 - カーボンナノチューブを浮遊させることが可能な界面活性剤、流体およびある一定量のカーボンナノチューブを組み合わせる工程を含み、該流体、界面活性剤およびカーボンナノチューブが、該カーボンナノチューブを浮遊させるのに好適な比で含まれることを特徴とするカーボンナノチューブを浮遊させる方法。
- 前記カーボンナノチューブが、単層または多層カーボンナノチューブである請求項18記載の方法。
- 前記カーボンナノチューブが単層カーボンナノチューブである請求項19記載の方法。
- 前記カーボンナノチューブが、流体および界面活性剤と組み合わせる前に、バンドル、凝集体またはロープの形である請求項18記載の方法。
- 前記流体が約99.97〜約90.00%の配合量で含まれ、前記界面活性剤が約0.01〜約10%の配合量で含まれ、前記カーボンナノチューブが約0.01〜約50gの配合量で含まれる請求項18記載の方法。
- 前記組み合わせる工程が、約0〜約175℃の温度で行われる請求項18記載の方法。
- 前記温度が、0〜20℃である請求項23記載の方法。
- 前記浮遊カーボンナノチューブが、室温で形成される請求項18記載の方法。
- 前記界面活性剤が、セチルトリメチルアンモニウムブロマイドである請求項18記載の方法。
- 前記浮遊カーボンナノチューブを音波処理する工程を更に含む請求項18記載の方法。
- 前記流体および界面活性剤を、カーボンナノチューブと接触させる前に、組み合わせる請求項18記載の方法。
- 流体、カーボンナノチューブを浮遊させることが可能な界面活性剤、およびカーボンナノチューブを含有し、該流体、界面活性剤およびカーボンナノチューブが、カーボンナノチューブの濃度3.0g/L以上に対する該カーボンナノチューブを浮遊させるのに好適な比で含まれることを特徴とする組成物。
