Abstract
1500817 Work-hardened diamond GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 23 April 1975 [30 May 1974] 16785/75 Heading C1A A work-hardened diamond is prepared and mounted by a process comprising (a) filling an enclosure with a charge composed solely of discrete diamond crystals or at least one diamond crystal together with loose crystalline diamond or cubic boron nitride as embedment material therefor, (b) subjecting said enclosure and said charge to the simultaneous application of pressure and temperature conditions located in the region of plastic deformation as shown in the carbon phase diagram of Fig. I for a period in excess of 1 minute, (c) reducing the temperature to below 50C, (d) reducing the pressure to atmospheric pressure, (e) recovering the diamond content having deformation lamallae introduced therein from said charge. The charge may be solely diamond crystals of 5 to 500 micrometres size range. Pressure and temperature conditions simultaneously applied may be in the diamond-stable region of the carbon phase diagram, a maximum pressure of 55 kilobars and a maximum temperature of 1500C being preferred, or may be in the plastic deformation region of the diagram.
