Abstract
997,090. Rolling. MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO. Aug. 2, 1963 [Aug. 9, 1962], No. 30707/63. Heading B3M. Apparatus for axially adjusting a roll in a rolling mill stand comprises a first number fixed to the stand, a second number fixed to the chock, and a universal joint connecting the members to allow axial roll adjustment without restricting movement of the roll chock in a vertical plane. To the chock 6 of a roll neck 92 is bolted a support 48 which houses a sleeve 64, clamped in position by a locking ring 74. Similarly, in an extension 28 bolted to the stand 2 is housed a sleeve 38 held by a locking ring 42. Connecting the sleeves is a dumb-bell shaped link 75, its ends 78 and 80 being firmly but rotatably held in bushes 82 and 83. On loosening the ring 42 and rotating the sleeve 38, by means of a square recess 46, the link 75 and hence the chock and roll are axially moved. The chock 6 is at all times free to move and rotate in a vertical plane to compensate for roll flexure under load. For removal of the roll, the ring 74 is loosened and the sleeve 64 rotated through 90 degrees. Flanges 66 are moved clear of recesses 56 and 58 so that the chock can be moved freely. In other embodiments the effective length of a modified link 75 is adjustable to give axial adjustment, or the link takes the form of two balls attached to the chock and stand extension and having a sleeve clamped between them. The upper roll of the mill is balanced by adjustable spring-urged levers acting on the upper chocks (Fig. 2, not shown).
