Abstract

1390094 Rolling mills BRITISH STEEL CORP 15 May 1973 [16 May 1972] 22946/72 Heading B8M A rolling mill stand includes a pair of rolls 7 through which stock is passed, one of the rolls being supported such that it can rock about a central axis perpendicular to the plane containing the roll axes. The upper roll (Fig. 3) is supported in a frame 15 which is connected to an arm 16 for pivotal movement about a pin 18. Bearing surfaces 24 and 25 allow such movement. The two rolls are movable towards and away from each other by pairs of arms 21, 22 and 12, 13 which support the rolls. The arms are pivoted about axes 9 and 10 (Fig. 2) and are moved in unison by rams 11. Links 30 and 34 are coupled to the arms and to a limit switch assembly 37 and screw assembly 38 for limiting the movement of the arms and maintaining a desired pass line. The mill is suitable for rolling tapered leaf springs 39 which are drawn through the rolls. Tapered formers 40 on each side of such a spring determine the degree of taper produced, and determine the position of the upper roll about its pivot pin. The rolls are suitably freely rotatable.
