Abstract

996,617. Automatic circuit breakers; actuation of switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 28, 1961 [Dec. 1, 1960], No. 41355/60. Heading H2B. A spring closing mechanism for a circuitbreaker comprises one or more helical springs 5 for closing the breaker and an hydraulic jack for charging the springs arranged concentrically within the said springs. Liquid is pumped into the jack cylinder 19 through a pipe 22 from a reservoir 24, a microswitch 41 automatically controlling a motor 40 in the pump circuit to keep the springs 5 fully charged. Stops 47 retain the springs 5 fully charged until released electrically by a solenoid 42 or manually by a lever 53, the consequent movement of a lever 45 causing opening of a pilot valve 23, which in turn opens the main valve (Fig. 2, not shown) allowing rapid discharge of the liquid in the jack cylinder 19. As springs 5 extend, a push rod 14 closes the circuit-breaker by a trip-free mechanism 31 and the motor 40 is automatically started to recharge the springs. An auxiliary hand-operated jack (not shown) may be used for slow closing of the breaker.
