Abstract

An automatic circuit-breaker 10, Fig. 3, mounted within an enclosure 1, 3 is actuated externally of the enclosure through a pivoted arm 30, 36 engaging the circuit-breaker handle 11 and actuated from an external handle 13 through a lost-motion linkage assembly 38, 39 whereby the handle 11 is free to move into its ON position by normal snap-action of the circuit breaker 10 and is also free to return to its OFF position without causing movement of the handle 13 when the circuit breaker 10 trips. The arrangement is such that the handle 13 remains in the ON position when the circuitbreaker trips but an extension 45 of the arm 30 is visible through aperture 46 of the cover to indicate the tripped condition. Handle 13 rotates a hexagonal spindle 14 to which a plate 23 carrying a pin 38 is keyed. The pin 38 engages in a shaped slot 39, 41, 42, Fig. 6, of the arm 30 which is pivoted at 32. On closure of the switch by handle 13 plate 23 and pin 38 move clockwise from the OFF position to the intermediate position (shown, Fig. 6). The pin 38 initially in recess 41 of arm 30 positively moves the arm 30 but as pin 38 passes lobe 40 the arm 30 is free to move clockwise as the circuit breaker actuator 11 snaps to the ON position. Recess 42 of the arm 30 also permits return movement of the arm 30 relative to pin 38 when the circuit breaker 10 is tripped. Snap-action motion is also provided for the handle 13 and comprises a compression spring plunger system (not shown), coupled to the plate 23 at slot 24 and moving over a dead-centre position;
