Abstract

1,145,959. Electromagnetic switches; automatic circuit-breakers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 Feb., 1968 [9 March, 1967], No. 11070/67. Heading H1N. An overload current, which will operate, e.g. the conventional electromagnetic trip mechanism 18 of a circuit-breaker and thereby release its moving contact arm 6 by means of a latch 12, also causes operation of sensitive quick-acting switching means (such as a sensitive relay, thyratron or thyristor) which serves to discharge a previously charged capacitor (not shown) through an electromagnetic coil 30 which then repels a copper ring 32 on a rod 26 secured to " fast " contact 2 to break the contacts 2, 4 before the conventional trip mechanism 18 acts. The operating mechanism 10, which applies a closing force to contact 4 until tripping, is that of Specification 934,210, and the latch 12 is that of Specification 849,658. Contact 2 is restored by its spring 38, or is latched in its open position by balls 54 pressed into a tapering aperture between the rod 26A and a hole 50A by a light spring 56, Fig. 2. Contact arm 6, in moving " slow " contact 4 to its contacts-open position, releases this ball latch by striking a pin 60 on a link 62. The opening of contact 2 may be utilized to trip the latch 12 of contact arm 6, Fig. 3 (not shown), and trip mechanism 18 is then dispensed with.
