Abstract
995,563. Ion sources; particle accelerators. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. June 26, 1962 [June 29, 1961], No. 24546/62. Heading H1D. In a synchrotron accelerator, a positive ion beam is produced by a gun 10 comprising a hollow open-ended anode and two cathodes, apertured for passage of the ion beam, and arranged at opposite ends of the anode, to maintain a glow discharge in the presence of an axial magnetic field and at pressures below 10<SP>-3</SP> mm. of Hg. Preferably a voltage of at least 2 KV. is applied between the anode and cathodes to produce a substantially monovoltage ion beam. The anode may be of circular, square or rectangular cross-section, and the product of the axial magnetic field intensity and the smallest inner diameter of the anode is preferably at least 300 gauss-inches. The axial magnetic field may be produced between apertured polepieces which support the cathodes.
