Abstract
916,854. Ion sources; thermonuclear apparatus. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Jan. 11, 1961 [March 29, 1960], No. 1183/61. Classes 39 (1) and 39 (4). An ion gun producing an electrically neutral ionised plasma relatively uncontaminated by neutral gas molecules comprises concentric anode and cathode electrodes 1, 2 separated by an annular gap 3 across which a gas discharge is struck. The gas is fed into the gun via a tube 14, passages 15, 16 and a manifold 7 formed by recesses in the bodies of the anode and cathode. An electrode 8, at a floating potential, is positioned within the manifold 7 with its outer surface aligned with the inner surface of the annular gap 3. A coil 23 provides an axial magnetic field. The electrodes 1, 2, 8 are supported by tubes 5, 6, 10 which are spaced by steatite insulators 11, 12; gas tight 0-rings 13 being provided. Electrode 1, 2 are formed of graphite. The gun may be used in a mirror-type nuclear fusion reactor and application to particle accelerators or mass spectrometers is mentioned. Specifications 853,916 and 858,734 are referred to.
