Abstract
995,322. Centrifugal pumps. HAMWORTHY PUMPS & COMPRESSORS Ltd. Feb. 13, 1964 [Feb. 21, 1963], No. 6988/63. Heading F1C. A centrifugal pump comprises an impeller having balance passages leading from the impeller eye to a space adjacent the side of the impeller remote from the eye, an exhaust connection to the space, and rotatable vanes in the space. The pump shown is primed by withdrawing air from the impeller eye 24 via balance holes 28 and an annular space above the impeller, by means of an air pump (not shown) communicating with the annular space. Any liquid leaking past wear rings 26 into the annular space and tending to prevent complete removal of the air is mixed with the air by means of rotating vanes 29 to form an air-liquid mixture which can be withdrawn by the air pump. The vanes 29, which also reduce the leakage past the wear rings 26, are radial or curved and extend between the impeller hub and an annular flange 27 which also carries the inner wear ring 26. The vanes 29 may instead be carried by the impeller shaft 15. After removal of an elongated coupling 19 which connects the impeller shaft 15 to the motor shaft 20, cover plate 5 can be unbolted from the pump casing 1 and the cover plate, impeller and impeller shaft can be raised as a unit and then removed through a large opening at one side of the motor pedestal 21.
