Abstract

994,623. Dry shavers. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 11, 1964 [Feb. 14, 1963], No. 5675/64. Heading B4B. In a dry shaver having a shaving head comprising a movable cutter co-operating with an apertured shear plate, means are provided for oscillating the shear plate in two directions simultaneously but at different frequencies, the directions of the oscillations extending transversely of one another in a plane parallel to the shaving plane. The ratio between the frequencies of the oscillations is preferably 4 to 5. The shear plate 1 is a sliding fit in a ring 20 fixed to a plate 10 provided with a slot 13 which fits over a pin 12 fixed in a part 11 of the shaver housing. The plate 10 is fixed to a block 9 provided with a slot 8 in which engages a pin 7 projecting eccentrically from the upper end of a shaft 4. A rotary cutter is driven by a shaft. The shafts 3, 4 are driven from a motor-driven shaft 5. When the shaft 4 rotates, the pin 7 cooperates with the slot 8 to impart a longitudinal reciprocating motion to the plate 10 (as indicated by the double arrow R in Fig. 2), the plate being guided in this motion by the pin 12. At the same time, a cam 18 co-operates with a groove or recess 19 in the lower face of the block 9 to impart an oscillatory pivotal motion to the plate 10 about the pin 12 (as indicated by the double arrows O in Fig. 2). The cam is driven by the shaft 4 through an epicyclic reduction gear comprising a sun pinion 6 fixed on the shaft 4 and two planetary pinions 15, 16 rotatably mounted on a carrier 14 and meshing with the sun pinion and with a fixed ring of teeth 17 formed in the housing part 11. The cam is fixed to the carrier 14 for rotation with the shaft 4. The frequency of the oscillatory pivotal motion of the plate 10 is lower than that of the reciprocatory motion of the plate. The plate is retained on the housing part 11 by a plate 21 which incorporates a skin-stretching rim 22 and a grid to prevent the user's skin from moving with the shear plate. The cutter and shear plate may, alternatively, have the form of cylinders or parts of cylinders and the cutter reciprocate in the direction of its longitudinal axis.
