993,624. Wells &c. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. April 23, 1964 [April 25, 1963], No. 16894/64. Heading E1F. Hydrocarbons are recovered from a formation penetrated by spaced output and input means by initiating a combustion front in the formation adjacent the output means, maintaining the front by introducing combustion-supporting fluid through the input means, controlling the fluid to maintain the formation upstream of the front at a temperature below the spontaneous ignition temperature of the hydrocarbons in the formation, and removing hydrocarbons from the formation through the output means. The control of the fluid, which may be air or gases containing oxygen, may be exercised by introducing therewith a heat absorbent such as water, or an anti-oxidant. The fluid may be fed to some input wells and redirected to other input wells to allow parts of the formation to cool, the process being repeated if necessary. The methods of control may be used in combination.
