991,915. Tubular heat exchangers. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. Dec. 11, 1962 [Dec. 11, 1961; Nov. 23, 1962], Nos. 46552/62 and 44407/62. Divided out of 991,911. Heading F4S. A shell and tube type heat-exchanger has a number of clusters 16 of tubes 24 which are attached at their ends to headers 26 each cluster being provided with an inlet and an outlet tube 18 leading respectively from and to common inlet and outlet tube headers 20. The tubes 24 are threaded through spacer plates 30 provided with elongated holes (Fig. 5, not shown) so that the tubes may be sprung outwardly and held in this position by means of taper keys (Fig. 7, not shown) inserted into the holes in order to ensure uniform distribution of all the tubes over the cross-section of the shell of the heat-exchanger for the greater part of their length. The preferred outline for the cluster of tubes where they are sprung is hexagonal both where the headers are circular and hexagonal since this shape lends itself to the uniform distribution of the tubes. In order to prevent restriction to the flow of medium outside the tubes which would occur with juxtaposed hexagonal spacer plates the tube clusters may be staggered slightly as shown.
