Abstract

1,132,074. Heat exchangers. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. 6 Dec., 1965 [23 Dec., 1964], No. 51671/65. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger comprises a casing 15 containing a metallic, fluid-pervious mass 18 in which is embedded heat exchange tubes 16 of elongated, e.g. oval, cross-section, extending between tube plates (23, 24, Fig. 3) the tubes 16 being arranged with their longer dimensions parallel and uniformly spaced over substantially the whole length of that dimension, and the mass being bonded to the tubes. The arrangement shown includes additional tubes 17 of circular cross-section in casing zones where elongate tubes cannot conveniently be utilized. Methods described for forming the mass are similar to those described in Specification 1,124,076. In use, the casing may be connected into the radiator hose or other section of a vehicleengine cooling system, whereby water flows through the tubes in heat-exchange with another fluid, e.g. oil, which flows through the pervious mass and over the tubes between an inlet 21 and an outlet 22. In further forms described (Figs. 6 and 7) the porous mass including the assembly of tubes and tube plates is prefabricated as a separate rectangular unit with imperforate side-plates (130, 131). The unit or a plurality of such units arranged as a block (Fig. 7) is then secured within the casing, the spaces (136, 137) between the side-plates and the casing wall becoming filled, through apertures (132, 133) in said plates, with a stationary body of the fluid passing over the tubes whereby fluid pressure on each face of the side-plates is equalized.
