Abstract
1,262,377. Heating steam boilers by hot liquids. NEDERLANDS APPLIED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FOR INDUSTRY, TRADE & COMMERCE. 13 May, 1969 [30 May, 1968], No. 24368/69. Heading F4A. A heat exchanger in which steam is generated and which operates with liquid metal, e.g. sodium, as the heat transferring medium, comprises a casing, in which the heat transferring medium circulates, having water or steam tubes 1 attached to a tube plate 2, which tubes for a part of their length are enclosed in pockets 10 closed by the tube plate 2 at one end and open to the interior of the heat exchanger at their other end which pockets 10 trap the liquid metal to form a stagnant layer that protects the tubes 1 and their joints with the plate 2 from thermal stresses. The pockets 10 are formed as tubular channels by a grid of baffles 5, Fig. 2, built into an open-ended cylinder 6 bolted to the tube plate 2. The tube plate 2 has holes 3 for connecting the steam tubes to a header 4. The liquid sodium penetrates the annular space (16), Fig. 3 (not shown), between a cylindrical baffle (15) and the casing and into the pockets 10 where the flow rate is greatly reduced thus forming the protective stagnant layer.
