Abstract

Stereospecific polymers of a -olefines, the a -olefine having a carbon chain of from C12-C24, are prepared by polymerization employing a Ziegler type catalyst. Polyoctadecene-1 is prepared by heating under nitrogen a mixture of dried octadecene-1 and finely powdered lithium aluminium hydride to produce lithium tetraoctadecyl aluminium. The tetra-alkyl was stirred under nitrogen with titanium tetrachloride and octadecene-1 in dry benzene and after standing, white crystalline polyoctadecene-1 obtained by sequential extraction with methanol containing 1% v./v. concentrated HCl, and benzene. The polymer chain may include a minor proportion of units other than the specified a -olefines, may be a homopolymer of one of the specified a -olefines, or an interpolymer of two or more such a -olefines.ALSO:A release coating on a substrate comprises a solid polymer of an a -olefine having a carbon chain length of from C12 to C24. The polymer may have a melting point higher than 50 DEG C. The a -olefine may be a normal olefine having an even number of carbon atoms. The polymer, e.g. crystalline solid polyoctadecen-1, may be applied from organic solvent solution on to, for example, one side of a cellulose film coated on the other side with a keycoat, dried, and the key-coated side further coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive. The coating may also constitute part of an interliner. The polymer chain may include a minor proportion of units other than of the specified a -olefines, and may be a homopolymer of one a -olefine (as defined) or an interpolymer of two or more such a -olefines.
