Abstract
Aromatic hydrocarbons are separated from mixtures thereof with non-aromatic hydrocarbons by countercurrent solvent extraction at 25-150 DEG C. with aqueous morpholine or a derivative thereof containing one or more C1-C4 alkyl groups, the solvent preferably containing 0.5-50% by volume of water. Preferably at least some of the water is added to the extraction process near the point of removal of the extract. The raffinate is washed with water to remove solvent, the washings being added to the solvent as a source of water and the extract is distilled to obtain aromatic hydrocarbon-water azeotropes overhead and the morpholine as bottoms. Preferably the extract is washed with a light aliphatic stream and/or an aromatic reflux stream. The process may be applied to reformate gasolines to obtain pure aromatic hydrocarbons or an aromatic-rich gasoline with a raffinate which may be recycled to the reforming.
