988,355. Envelopes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 20, 1961 [July 20, 1960], No. 25221/60. Heading B6A. An envelope comprises a rigid cover and a soft, pliable protective coating of synthetic plastic provided in the interior thereof with the coating adhering superficially to the surface of a paper support secured to said cover. The cover of cardboard or chipboard may comprise two separate or integral squares A, B and a rectangular sheet 1 of protective coating, composed of polyethylene formed as an adhering layer on paper or polyethylene extruded on to the paper in liquid or plastic form, laid over the squares of cardboard A, B, whereby the envelope is formed by folding the composite laminate upon itself along lines 7 and 8 so that the polyethylene coating on one folded portion faces the polyethylene on the other folded portion. The coated paper 1 is provided with overlapping portions 2 and 3, which serve to secure the coated paper to the rigid cover. An art or decorative cover having flaps on three of its sides together with the overlapping portions of the protective coating are folded over the front or rear of the envelope and secured by an adhesive so as to close three sides of the envelope. The protective coating may be secured to the cover over the whole surface of the latter or only along the edges thereof, whereby a cushion of air may be retained between the cover and coating to increase the protection.
