Abstract

988,245. Wells. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. July 17, 1961 [July 18, 1960], No. 25854/61. Heading E1F. Apparatus for remotely connecting cables to the base of an underwater wellhead from a vessel, or from a platform supported on legs, comprises a guide element extending between the base and the vessel, or platform, a frame slidable along the element, means at the lower ends of the cables releasably connected to the frame, and lock-down elements on the base for locking the means at the lower ends of the cables thereto. The base 17 has a remotely controlled wellhead 18 to which is attached a buoy line 37 serving as a guide for lowering tubing 41. In its inoperative position the line and its buoy 38 are stored in a container 40. The tubing is guided by arms 44, 45 engaging the line and is adapted to be connected to the wellhead by a latch 42, a carriage 47 carrying lights and a television camera being provided to facilitate alignment of the latch and wellhead. The frame 54 supported by the cables 63, 64 is lowered down the tubing and is guided by the line, the tubing and frame being provided with interengaging parts ensuring the alignment of posts 61, 62 on the frame with split tubes 22, 23 on the base. The cables are fixed against upward movement in the posts by latches 65, and when the posts rest within the tubes stop mechanisms 71 are operated to permit the latches to fall and engage stops 75 in the tubes to connect the cables to the base before the frame is withdrawn. The buoy line or the tubing may be dispensed with when lowering the frame. The tubes on the base may be replaced by posts having shaped upper ends for engagement by the latches.
