Abstract

1,242,769. Boring earth and rock. ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO. 20 May, 1969 [21 May, 1968], No. 25714/69. Heading E1F. The upper end 12 of a pipe 13 (a conductor casing) is held steady in an aperture in a floor 14 of a drilling structure 10 by fluid actuated rams 22, 24, 26, provided with rollers such as 24a engaging the pipe. The pipe is supported by elevators 20 and prevented from lateral movement by the rollers while a further pipe section 30 is connected. After the connection is formed, the elevators are removed and the pipe section lowered through the aperture under control of the rollers. A further roller may be provided in a fixed frame 56 selectably mountable in a brace 54. The drilling structure may be a semi-submersible platform or a floatable drilling vessel.
