948,325. Wells. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Oct. 21, 1960 [Oct. 23, 1959], No. 36193/60. Heading E1F. During cementing an underwater well a hanger 52 supporting casing 51 is temporarily held a fixed distance above the casing suspension bowl 50 to form an annulus 57 through which the well fluid displaced by the cement flows upwardly. The well comprises a conductor pipe 23 having a casing head 21, and a marine conductor 24 extends from the head to a vessel 11. The casing is lowered into the well depending from a cementing string 25 having a support device 26 provided with dogs 28, 29 adapted to engage projections 45, 46 or 47 to support the casing temporarily. Cement supplied to the string pushes a wiper plug 63 to force the well fluid down the casing, up the annulus 60 around the casing, through the annulus 57 and up the marine conductor. After supplying the required amount of cement a ball is dropped on to a follower plug 64 which is forced to the bottom of the casing by water pressure. Before the cement sets the string is turned to retract the dogs, the casing is lowered to seat the hanger in the bowl, the string is rotated further to release a connector 55 from the hanger, and the string, support device, a spacer tube 54 and the connector are withdrawn to the vessel. The support device shown is mechanically operated but in a modification it is hydraulically operated. The support device may comprise a temporary hanger above the hanger and having threaded connection thereto, the arrangement being that initial rotation of the string lowers the hanger to seat within the bowl and further rotation disconnects the string and temporary hanger from the hanger and casing.
