987,380. Automatic position control. STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO. July 9, 1963 [July 9, 1962], No. 27055/63. Heading G3R. [Also in Division H1] A circuit for automatically keeping constant the path of the beam in an electron beam melting furnace includes a variable transformer 56, a transformer 58 and a rectifier 32 for supplying a direct current to the electromagnet 16 directing the beam path, the direct current varying with the beam voltage. The changes in beam voltage are due to changes in the impedance of the beam path due to ions produced in the path of the beam. The electron gun 14 is energized by a constant current network 42 via step-up transformer 48 and rectifier 50, variable transformer 24 supplying the cathode filament current.
