Abstract
938,187. Electron beam apparatus. STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO. Oct. 10, 1960 [Dec. 28, 1959], No. 34570/60. Class 39 (1). In an electron beam melting and casting furnace with melt stock 10, Fig. 1, molten pool 9, annular cathode 16 and focusing electrode 22, the inner edge of the focusing electrode is within and approximately coplanar with the cathode so that the electron beam is directed to the molten pool without excessive diversion to the melt stock. The melt stock may be completely outside the electron beam and heated solely by the molten pool and the ionized plasma that forms above it. The cathode plane may be lowered slightly relatively to the focusing electrode as shown in Fig. 5, where the line 39 intersects the cathode plane at, or at an angle not exceeding, 45 degrees. Separate guns may be used for the melt stock and for the molten pool. In Fig. 6, the melt stock 43 is in the form of a powder and the electrons are directed on to the lower end of the melt stock without excessive bombardment of the feed tube 44. The powdered melt stock may be supplied horizontally, Fig. 7 (not shown). Specification 830,122 is referred to.
