986,774. Door latches. WALTER CASSEY Ltd. Feb. 5, 1964 [Feb. 20, 1963], No. 6789/63. Heading E2A. A door fastening means includes a housing 4 for mounting on one side of a door 6, a latch member 12 pivotally mounted in the housing and having a keeper engaging portion 15, an operating member 8 which engages and moves the latch member from a latched to an unlatched position, a spring loaded toggle mechanism 17, 18 mounted in the housing for retaining the latch member in both its latched and unlatched positions and an actuating mechanism 21 for mounting on the opposite side of the door, said actuating mechanism being connected to the toggle mechanism so that the former can be used to unlatch the latch member 12 when the operating member is secured in a position corresponding to the latched position. The operating member 8 is a lever pivoted to the housing on a pin 9, the longer limb having apertured lugs which can be aligned with an apertured lug 11 on the housing to enable the member 8 to be locked in the latched position by means of a padlock. The latch member 12 is pivoted about an axis 13 and has a nose portion 14 which is engageable and movable by the shorter limb of the member 8 to unlatch the latch member. The toggle mechanism includes a lug 17 projecting from the latch member 12 and connected to a hollow link 18 by a pin and slot connection, the link being pivotally connected at its other end to the housing 4. The interior actuating mechanism has a body 21 mounted by flanges 22 to the door and includes an actuating member 23 pivoted relative to the body and urged away from it by a spring 24 and an actuating rod which engages the actuating member and the hollow link. The fastening means is used in conjunction with a keeper 26 mounted on the door frame. Even when the operating member 8 is held in a locked position the latch member can be released by the actuating member 23 which, through the rod 25, moves the link 18 into the unlatched position (Fig. 2 not shown) causing the toggle mechanism to be over-centred. The fastening is closed by the nose portion 14 abutting the keeper 26 causing the latch member to pivot and over-centre the toggle mechanism into the latched position.
