Abstract

986,409. Coating surfaces. JONES & LAUGHLIN STEEL CORPORATION. Jan. 4, 1962 [Jan. 16, 1961; Feb. 15, 1961], No. 399/62. Heading B2B. A metal (e.g. steel) pipe is externally coated by passing it through heater 17, over mandrel 21 extending through the fluidized bed container 1 and over spray head 25 supplied with cooling fluid, the pipe being rotated as it moves over rollers 16, 18 and 20. The bed is fluidized by gas entering from below plate 2 from pipe 32, by gas entering between the pipe being coated, and the entry and exit ports 7 and 6 from pipes 35 (which gas prevents escape of coating material), and by suction from tube 5. The ports 6 and 7 may take the form of doublewalled sleeves, the inner sleeves being provided with channels or holes. The cooling fluid is supplied to spray head 25 via conduits 28, 38, 40, 46 and 48, conduits 40 and 48-having ports 42 and separate disconnectable means 41, 72, for introducing fluid to each port, being provided. Between the ports 42 is a check valve 47 preventing fluid flowing from conduit 40 to conduit 48. Conduit 40 has an inner sleeve 44, partially bonded thereto, covering port 42. When means 41 is applied to conduit 40, fluid forces sleeve 44 away from port 42 and passes to spray head 25. When means 41 is not connected to conduit 40, means 72 is and fluid enters conduit 48, passes through check valve 47, presses sleeve 44 against port 42 in conduit 40, and passes to spray head 25.
