Abstract

985,919. Taphole bushes. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Aug. 1, 1961 [Aug. 26, 1960], No. 27953/61. Heading B8T. A plastics, e.g. polyethylene taphole bush for a drum comprises an annular member 12 having a portion externally threaded at 15 passing through an aperture in a drum end 5, which drum may have a plastics liner 6, and a retaining ring 11 screwed on to the threaded portion. An annular surface 23 of the portion 12 provides a liquid-tight seal with the inner face of the drum and thus prevents the contents from reaching and corroding the cut edge 8 of the aperture. The surface 23 may be bevelled as shown, may be flat, may have integral sealing rings on it or a separate ring held in a groove. It may have a sealing compound applied to it before being fitted. The lower face of the ring 11 may also bear a sealing ring. A portion 13 of the member 12 is of non-circular configuration, e.g. octagonal to fit into a similar shaped aperture so as to prevent rotation of the member 12 during the tightening of the member 11. Recesses 20 are spaced round the retaining ring 11 for use in screwing down the latter. The members 11, 12 may be permanently joined by heat sealing.
