Abstract

985,302. Unreeling. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. July 28, 1961 [Aug. 16, 1960], No. 28284/60. Heading B3E. [Also in Division D1] In unwinding cord (e.g. wire cord for rubberizing for use in pneumatic tyres) from a bobbin, the bobbin 9 is mounted on a spindle 3 rotatably mounted at 17 in a supporting member 14, and a plate 6 is secured to the spindle; a friction member, e.g. an annular pad 15, is located between the members 6, 14 and attached to one of them and means are provided for applying a predetermined load to the friction member, whereby, in order to rotate the bobbin, a torque is required which is additional to that required to overcome the frictional resistance set up by the weight of the rotatable parts (i.e. of the bobbin and the cord it carries) so that a substantially constant unwinding tension is created in the cord throughout the unwinding operation. The means for loading the friction member may comprise a spring 19 compressed by a nut 20 on a threaded part of the spindle. In the form shown, the pad is attached to the support 14, and the plate 6 is connected to the bobbin by a peg 12. A number of such devices may feed cords at equal tensions, or at different tensions obtained by using pads or plates 6 of different materials and dimensions.
