Abstract
984,334. Folding paper &c. K. H. HONSEL. Sept. 24, 1963, No. 37593/63. Heading B6H. In a method of folding portions of paper, cardboard, plastic material, or the like by a knife cylinder and a gripper cylinder, when the folding knife 24 has reached its maximum depth of penetration into the opened grippers 28, the knife is radial to the axis 29 of the gripper cylinder, and is controlled by gearing so that until completion of the folding operation it always remains in a position directed radially to the axis of the gripper cylinder. In a modification, the grippers 28 are controlled by gearing instead of the folding knife 24, whereby the knife-receiving gap therein is directed radially of the knife cylinder. As shown in Fig. 4, the knife 24 has been gradually turned so that it is still directed towards the axis 29 and can slide without friction from between the closing jaws 28, 28a at the completion of the folding operation. The shaft 3 of the folding knife cylinder is rotatably mounted in bearings in side-plates 1, 2, and levers 8, 9 secured to the shaft have bearings in which a second shaft 10 is rotatably mounted. A lever 13 pinned to the shaft 10 carries a roller 15 which can roll on a fixed cam disc 16. Two toothed segments 17, 17a secured to the shaft 10 can engage toothed segments 18, 18a, respectively, which are secured to levers 19, 20 rotatably mounted on the shaft 3. The levers 19, 20 carry a shaft 23 on which the folding knife 24 is secured, and the shaft 23 is secured to a lever 25 which carries a roller 26 which co-operates with a fixed cam disc 27. Thus, when the shaft 3 rotates, the shaft 23 is rotated about the axis of the shaft 3 by the segments 17 . . . 18a, the cam disc 27 rocks the shaft 23 and the knife 24, and a further rocking of the shaft 23 bodily about the shaft 3 is imposed by the cam disc 16, so that the folding knife 24 is rocked.
