A machine for trimming the edges and ends of oversize veneer strips bonded to the edge faces of rectangular panels comprises a conveyer 11 to carry and transport the panels, end cutter means adapted to traverse end corners of each panel whilst the latter is held stationary upon the conveyer, edge cutter means adapted to traverse longitudinal edges of each panel whilst the latter is fed past them on the conveyer, and control means adapted to synchronize operation of each cutter means with the operation of the conveyer. In the machine described a roller track 65 raised by air cylinders 66, 67, Fig. 3, receives a panel 33<SP>1</SP> and is then lowered to deposit the panel on to conveyer 11 where it is held in position by pressure pads 45, 46 actuated by air cylinders 47, 48. Whilst the panel was fed on to track 65 it caused the rotary cutter heads of end trimming devices 24, Fig. 2, to be set in motion. Once the panel is clamped in position the cutter devices are pivoted about a horizontal axis so that the cutter heads thereof describe an arcuate path to trim the ends of the veneer. Pivoting of the devices 24 is effected by an air cylinder 36 operation of which causes rotation of a shaft 27 on which the devices 24 are mounted by arms 25. The arms 25 are pivoted to allow the cutter heads of the devices 24 to be urged against the ends of the panel by a spring 30. After return of the devices 24 to their original position and release of the pressure pads 45, 46 the conveyer is actuated to carry the panel past the rotary cutter heads 60, Fig. 5, of cutting devices mounted on swing arms 52. The cutting devices are spring-urged into contact with the upper and lower marginal edges of the panel edge faces and trim excess veneer therefrom as the panel advances.
