Abstract

Uranium based alloys comprise: Mo 0.8 - 1.2 atomic per cent Nb 0.8 - 1.2 atomic per cent the balance, apart from incidental impurities, being uranium. The alloys may be prepared by high frequency induction, vacuum melting at 1500-1550 DEG C. of a charge consisting of the pure metals or the Mo and Nb may be in the form of 3-6% master alloys with uranium. After holding at the melting temperature for 5 minutes the melt is vacuum cast into an alumina sprayed graphite mould. The cast rods may be further grain refined by heating at 700-900 DEG C. and cooling from this temperature at the rate of 100-250 DEG C. per minute, e.g. in air. Specification 863,492 is referred to.
