Abstract

1275030 Casting processes UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 19 April 1971 [24 April 1970] 25990/71 Heading B3F In a casting process, a shell mould 2 with an open bottom is placed on a chill plate and contained within a susceptor 6 surrounded by induction coils 8. Before casting the mould is heated to the melting temperature of an alloy to be cast therein. In order to avoid foreign particles condensing on the chill plate 4 during preheating, a heat-shield 26 is provided to cover the chill plate. The heat shield 26 is not flat and has its major portion not touching the chill plate 4 to reduce heat conduction. The alloy is poured (preferably in a vacuum) into the mould 2, whereupon the heat-shield 26 dissolves in the alloy. A niobium shield 26 is used when casting a nickel-based alloy. The heating coils 8 are switched off upwardly to induce upward solidification of the alloy from a crystal growth cavity 10, through a single-crystal selecting passage 12 into an article cavity 14, 16, 18, 20, to form a single crystal turbine blade. To cast a blade with a columnar grain structure, the single crystal selector passage 12 is omitted.
