Abstract

1,194,627. Centrifugal casting machines; mould materials. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 22 July, 1968 [12 June, 1968], No. 34917/68. Heading B3F. A centrifugal casting machine has an electrically heated holding or melting crucible 11 above a rotatable mould 32 and a water-cooled heat sink 24 within the mould to remove radiated heat from the internal surface of a casting 40 produced in the mould. To ensure even and non-rapid cooling of the casting the mould is surrounded by a heater. The heating coil of the crucible may form the mould surrounding heater if the mould is moved upwards after pouring, or a separate heating coil 38 may be provided. The water supply to the heat sink 24 and the temperature of the heating coil 38 can be regulated to control the cooling of the casting. When casting Be, a vacuum jacket is used to prevent oxidation. Molten Be is superheated to 1450‹ C. and cooled to 1350‹ C. just prior to pouring to remove the superheat. Pouring is effected at a rate which minizes splattering of the melt on to the heat sink. When the casting has cooled to 1000‹ C. He is introduced into the vacuum jacket to facilitate further cooling. Mould, materials, when casting Be a graphite mould coated with BeO and BeSO 4 is employed.
