Abstract

980,519. Secret contact - combination switches. ELECTRONIC SECURITY CORPORATION. June 28, 1962, No. 24813/62. Heading H2B. A secret combination switch comprises a shaft 25 carrying four loosely mounted conducting tumblers 35...38, each tumbler having a toothed periphery with one insulating segment 56 and an annular recess 43 in which is a radially extending web 45 ... 48 respectively. Projecting from the rear of each tumbler is a peg 50 and secured to the shaft is an arm 40 which is engageable with the peg 50 of the rear tumbler 38. Rotation of an indexed operating knob 28 causes arm 40 to pick up the peg 50 of the tumbler 38. Further rotation causes the web 48 of tumbler 38 to pick up peg 50 of tumbler 37. Continued rotation causes the tumblers to be picked up in turn. Rotation of knob 28 is halted by the operator when it reaches its corresponding reference position where the insulating segment 56 of tumbler 35 is engaged by contacts 68, 69 of bus-bars 65, 66. The knob is now rotated in the reverse direction, tumbler 35 being retained in position by the engagement of the contacts 68, 69 with the teeth of the tumbler, until the insulating segment of tumbler 36 is in engagement with its contacts 68, 69. The knob is successively, reversely rotated until the insulating segments of all the tumblers are in engagement with the contacts 68, 69 of bus-bars 65, 66 and thus the circuit through the bus-bars is broken. In order that the combination may be varied the ends of the shaft 25 are of non-circular crosssection and the arm 40 and knob 28 are adjustably mounted on them. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 8, 9, not shown) a coupling of non-circular cross-section is inserted between the end of the shaft and the knob so that the combination can be varied to a greater extent. The bus-bars 65, 66 are welded or adhesively secured to an insulating lining 60 in the case.
