Abstract

976,279. Boring earth &c. SOCONY MOBIL OIL CO. Inc. Sept. 19, 1963 [Sept. 26, 1962], No. 36922/63. Heading E1F. In a well drilling rig the components are driven by gas and the driving engine of each component is connected by a branch conduit to a gas supply conduit. Jet engines 10, having an air filter 11 at their inlets, discharge exhaust gases into the gas supply conduit 14 which has branch conduits 20, 29, 50, 70 connected to gas-turbines 23, 31, 52, 72 driving electric generators 24, mud pumps 34, draw works 55, and a rotary table 74. Power transmissions 32, 53, 73 are interposed in the drives of the mud pumps, the draw works, and the table. The conduit 14 has an open ended branch 15 which may be closed by a valve 16. The jet engines and the turbines may be isolated from the conduit 14 by valves 13, 22, 30, 51, 71. The jet engines may be replaced by free piston engines, or the conduit 14 may be connected to a source of natural gas instead of to the exhausts of engines.
