[Also in Groups XXI and XXIX] In well-drilling apparatus having an hydraulic turbine located near the lower end of a drill string, a channel is provided by-passing the turbine and having valve means for controlling the flow of fluid through the channel to keep the turbine speed within restricted limits. In Fig. 1, the turbine casing 2 is connected to the drill string 8 and its rotor shaft 3, which is hollow, is connected to a bit 7. Fluid circulated down the drill string 8 passes through the turbine blading 4, through ports 18 and then through the bit 7. Fluid on the inlet side of the turbine communicates through ports 19 with the inside of the rotor shaft 3 but is prevented from by-passing blading 4 by a spring-pressed valve 16 which opens when the pressure difference between the turbine inlet and outlet reaches a predetermined value. The valve may be a sleeve valve and may communicate with the outside of the turbine casing 2. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, a governor 24 opens a valve 25, in relation to the turbine speed, when fluid from the inlet side of the turbine acts on a servo piston 22 which depresses a valve head 16, urged towards its seat by a spring 20, and allows fluid to bypass the blading 4.
