Abstract

974, 317. Photographic silver halide materials. AGFA A.G. Oct. 18,1962 [Oct. 28, 1961], No. 39483/62. Heading G2C. The gelatin layers of photographic silver halide materials are hardened by incorporating therein, at a PH of 4-6, the bisulphite addition product of polyacrolein or a copolymer thereof containing at least 50% mol. of acrolein. The layers are not hardened at this pH, but hardening takes place at a pH of 7 or more in the usual processing baths. The acrolein may be copolymerized with acrylonitrile, acrylic acid or its esters, acrylamide, styrene or vinyl acetate. The hardeners may be used in conjunction with conventional hardeners such as formaldehyde, mucochoric acid and N, N', N<11>-triacroylhydrotriazine.
