Abstract

A binder for non-woven fabric (see Divisions D1 and D2) comprises a dispersion of 5-95 parts of a polyolefin having an average particle size of 0.1-100 microns in an aqueous solution of 5-95 parts of a cellulose derivative. The particle size distribution of the polyolefin may be 0.05-1 microns. The polyolefin may be a polymer of ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 2-butene, or isobutylene. The cellulose derivative may be sodium cellulose xanthate, sodium hydroxyethyl cellulose, or sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, chitin, or deacetylated chitin. The chitin may be dissolved in aqueous acetic acid. After fabric has been treated with the binder, the dissolved cellulose derivative is converted to cellulose or a water-insoluble cellulose derivative. Examples are given. Specifications 677,928, 744,839, 745,065 and 836,397 are referred to.ALSO:A binder for non-woven fabric comprises a dispersion of 5-95 parts of a polyolefin having an average particle size of 0.1-100 microns in an aqueous solution of 5-95 parts of a cellulose derivative. The particle size distribution of the polyolefin may be 0.05-1 microns. The polyolefin may be a polymer of ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 2-butene, or iso-butylene. The cellulose derivative may be sodium cellulose xanthate, sodium hydroxyethyl cellulose, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, chitin or deacetylateol chitin. The fabric may be of cotton, silk, wool, vicuna, mohair, alpaca, flax, ramie, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, polyamides, proteins, polyolefins, polyesters, vinyl or acrylic compounds, glass, asbestos, or metal. The fabric may be formed by carding, garnetting, air-laying, or paper making. The individual fibres of the fabric may have a length of 1/16 -2\ba1/2 inches. The fibre denier may be 1/2 -15. The web weight may be 35-800 grains per sq. yd. A web weight of up to 2000 grains per sq. yd. may be produced by laminating or folding. The proportion, on a dry basis, of binder to fabric may be 1-100%. The binder may be applied by dipping, spraying, or printing. The binder may completely cover the surface of the fabric or may cover 7-35% to form a pattern in the form of continuous or discontinuous straight or wavy lines or regular or irregular rectilinear or curvilinear figures. After the fabric has been treated with the binder, the dissolved cellulose derivative is converted to cellulose or a water-insoluble cellulose derivative. Examples are given. Specifications 677,928, 744,839, 745,065 and 836,397 are referred to.
