Abstract

967,267. Knitting. MONSANTO CO. July 2, 1962 [July 12, 1961], No. 25301/62. Heading D1K. A fabric is knitted from twist-curled textured nylon multi-continuous filament yarn with a total denier of 10-18 and 4-9 individual filaments, the twist in the twist-curled condition being 70-150 turns per inch in twist curled condition. Preferably, the yarn is nylon 66 heat set at 190-240‹C. Nylon 6, nylon 610 nylon 4, nylon 7 nylon 11 or copolymers thereof may however be used. Yarns may have a non-circular e.g. triangular or multilobar cross-section. The heel welt and other parts of the stocking may be knitted from other yarn. Alternate courses may be knitted from yarns of S twist the intervening courses being of Z twist. An example is given of a nylon-66 melt-spun cold drawn yarn with 5 filaments and a total denier of 15. The yarn had a tenacity of 5. 0 gms. per denier, an elongation of 27% and a twist of 0. 25 turns per inch. It was false twisted at 111 turns per inch and heat-set at 230‹C.
