Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of general formula: <FORM:0965293/C1/1> wherein Y represents a straight or branched alkylene chain having not more than 6 carbon atoms which may be interrupted by an oxygen atom, and Z represents a dialkylamino group, in which one or both alkyl groups, together with the nitrogen atom and, if desired, with the alkylene chain Y, may form one or more heterocyclic rings, in which, in addition to the nitrogen atom, a second heteroatom may also be present; and their acid addition salts and quarternary ammonium compounds; and their preparation by etherifying a compound of formula: <FORM:0965293/C1/2> or a functional derivative thereof with a compound of formula: HO-Y-Z or a functional derivative thereof by a known method for the etherification of alcohols. m-Trifluoromethyl-benzhydrol may be prepared by converting m-trifluoromethyl-aniline to m-trifluoromethyl-bromobenzene and reacting the Grignard derivative thereof with benzaldehyde. p-Trifluoromethyl-benzhydrol may be prepared by reduction of the corresponding ketone. p-Trifluoromethyl-benzhydryl chloride is prepared by reaction of the alcohol with thionyl chloride. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise the above compounds I and salts in association with pharmaceutical carriers. The compounds have antiacetylcholine, stimulating and psychotropic activity.
