Abstract

Copper plates, e.g. for photo-engraving, are etched and the copper dissolved after a masking pattern has been applied to the plate, using as electrolyte a soluble persulphate preferably of alkali metal or ammonia, and applying a voltage below that of copper deposition, e.g. in the range 0.3-1V. Preferably a solution containing 10-45% of ammonium persulphate is used, at temperatures up to 100 DEG F., using a mercury cathode. A trace of mercury as activator may be present in the electrolyte.
